At the end of the garden there is a five-bar gate. Then the field. Then the hedge and the dark. That autumn, something came and stood at it in the evenings.

It was the hour when the fields go blue. The hedge stops being a hedge. It becomes one long dark shape with rooks in the top of it. Jay was down at the coop with a torch in his teeth, counting hens. It does not take long to count two. Bo was walking the wall with his nose down.
