Scene 1 of 8

The rain stopped in the night. By eight the yard was steaming. Jay had the back door open. His coffee was going cold beside him. Bo lay across his left foot with all his weight on it. Out on the wet gravel, Red turned over stones. Grey stood behind her and watched. A blackbird sang in the hawthorn. Up the road a tractor changed gear.
